ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My landscape paintings are focused on the Appalachian mountain region and the bluegrass area of central Kentucky. Why landscapes? Because as long as I can remember I have loved the land, especially natural open areas with only a small amount of human interference. These places represent unrestricted freedom and solitude.

In my paintings I wish to reconnect to that sense of place, and by emphasizing light, shadow, and expressive color I hope to give the viewer the experience of connection with these areas. I try to quite the chaos of nature into a distilled image to mark the feelings that I have while viewing the landscape.

I use very soft pastels, usually Sennelier and Schmincke, on a sanded pastel paper, which holds many layers of pastel, allowing me to create a wide range of values while retaining the vibrancy of the pigments.
