ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I am a self-taught artist and have been weaving my hand-harvested willow bark since I was 17. Weaving strictly functional baskets for years, the emphasis of my most recent work is on form and technique. As I experiment with various twining techniques within a piece to inject pattern and design, my latest work reflects the influence of early Native American basketry that serves as an infinite source of inspiration.

I aspire to create simple, elegant woven vessels that possess a richness of spirit and a presence embodying the soul of the tree from which they came. My basketry is rooted in a resolve to keep life simple and joyful and directly connected to my natural environment. As my work evolves, I am compelled to create more refined, intuitive and intricate pieces, finding great satisfaction in emulating the art and integrity of fine basketry.
