ARTIST'S STATEMENTI develop images in a serial manner, creating multiple variations on a theme. Themes I have worked with include "Studio Light", "In Morehead Valley", "Cave Run Figure" and "Mound Cultures". My ambitions are to create compositions that embody lived experience and possess graphic power. My media include charcoal and conte drawing, stone lithography and monotype. Power Plant VII and IX are two of a series of compositions that focus on the power plant in Morehead. The plant is a huge solitary structure centered in the valley. One can see it from a great distance in all types of weather. Some days there is a stillness and no smoke, but on others the smoke rises quickly and is carried down the valley by the wind. During one summer trip, my son Ben and I visited Mound City in Chillicothe, Ohio. There we encountered traces of a prehistoric culture. Mound Cultures is a landscape composition inspired by that journey. It is located somewhere between the ancient mountain knobs of Morehead, and the mounds of the Hopewell culture. Some day we will get in our car again to go look for it. |
