ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Nature is the subject and theme of artist, Linda Cundiff. However, the aspect of nature presented in her work now is that of farm landscapes with the motif of the hay bale used as a design element in the pieces. Her landscapes are inspired by visual information from farmland in Taylor, Green and Adair Counties in South-central Kentucky. These scenes are from the area where she lives with her husband on a farm that has been in his family for over a hundred years. A descendant of early settlers of Virginia and Kentucky, she grew up on a farm where she began to draw the animals at an early age. By the second grade she knew she wanted to be an artist after having drawn a long circus parade on a roll of wallpaper at the request of her teacher. She received her training as a visual artist at Campbellsville College, Murray State University and Ohio University, Athens.

Of recent years, her work has been in the media of drawing, pastels, and printmaking. The images have evolved from more abstracted forms from nature to more representational forms, even though she still feels that abstraction is present in areas of her pieces. Some works represent spaces that are managed by farmers, but are empty of necessary machinery, animals or structures generally present. Time of season and time of day are important to the pieces and seeing changes in the environment.
